Product overview

The R&S®ZVA family was the high-end flagship of the Rohde & Schwarz network analyzer line, sweeping continuously from 300 kHz up to 110 GHz. The ZVA is known for its RF characteristics: leading dynamic range (typ. 140 dB at best), very low trace noise (typ. 0.001 dB) and very fast measurements (under 3.5 µs per point). It comes in two-port and four-port configurations with a multisource architecture, for precise measurements on active and passive components, mixers, amplifiers and millimeterwave devices. With its hardware options (step attenuators, direct generator and receiver access) and software options (time domain analysis, frequency conversion, pulse measurements, noise figure and more), the ZVA met the most demanding requirements in aerospace, defense, communications and research. The product is discontinued; its successor is the R&S®ZNA.

Key features

  • Leading dynamic range: typ. 140 dB on the ZVA8 from 100 MHz to 4 GHz, and typ. 140 dB on the ZVA40 and ZVA50 from 2 GHz to 20 GHz, so weak signals are still measured accurately
  • Very low trace noise: S11 trace noise of typ. 0.001 dB across the main bands (at 0 dBm, 1 kHz bandwidth), for highly repeatable results
  • Very fast measurements: under 3.5 µs per point in CW mode, and 201 points transferred over RSIB on LAN in under 0.7 ms, which suits high-throughput production test
  • Broad continuous coverage: five models spanning 300 kHz to 67 GHz, and system configurations to 110 GHz, with full S-parameter measurements from one instrument
  • Two-port or four-port configurations: two-source or four-source architectures with full multiport calibration (TOSM), for differential and multiport devices
  • Deep hardware options: per-port generator and receiver step attenuators (B21–B34) and direct generator/receiver access (B16), to suit different test topologies
  • A broad software catalogue: time domain analysis (K2), frequency conversion (K4), mixer phase measurements (K5), true differential mode (K6), pulse measurements (K7) and noise figure measurements (K30/K31)
  • High frequency resolution and stability: 1 Hz frequency resolution, and 1 × 10⁻⁷ static frequency accuracy with the OCXO option, for precise frequency-dependent measurements
  • Full measurement bandwidth range: 1 Hz to 1 MHz in 1/2/5 steps, extendable to 5 MHz with option K17, trading dynamic range against speed as the measurement needs
  • Extendable into the millimeterwave range: with R&S®ZVA-Zxxx or R&S®ZCxxx converters the system reaches 110 GHz and beyond, for W band and D band components

Typical applications

  • RF and microwave component characterization: accurate S-parameters (S11, S21, S12, S22) of filters, couplers, power dividers, connectors and transmission lines
  • Amplifier test: gain, gain flatness, input and output reflection coefficients, group delay and noise figure (with option K30/K31)
  • Mixer and frequency converter analysis: conversion loss, phase and group delay with the frequency conversion (K4) and mixer phase (K5) options
  • Millimeterwave component and module test: with ZVA-Zxxx converters, measure components in W band (75–110 GHz) and above for 5G millimeterwave, satellite communications and radar
  • Differential signal integrity test: with true differential mode (K6) and a four-port configuration, measure differential S-parameters, rise time, impedance against distance and skew on differential lines
  • Passive intermodulation (PIM) measurements: the wide dynamic range with two-source excitation supports PIM testing of passive components for mobile base station acceptance
  • Aerospace and defense component verification: wide dynamic range, low trace noise and broad coverage meet the demanding specifications of military and space RF components
  • Pulsed RF component measurement: with the pulse measurement options (K7/B7), pulsed S-parameter analysis of radar power amplifiers and pulsed RF components
