Product overview

The R&S®FSPN phase noise analyzer and VCO tester pairs unrivaled sensitivity with high measurement speed, for characterizing synthesizers, VCOs, OCXOs and DROs. Two internal low phase noise synthesizers and a real-time cross-correlation engine mean high-quality oscillators and VCOs can be measured in production with only a few correlations, while raising the correlation count lets the instrument dig into the most sensitive synthesizers and oscillators on the market in R&D. From the laboratory to the production line, it lifts both throughput and repeatability.

Key features

  • Fast pure phase noise measurements: a complete phase noise curve for a high-end source such as an OCXO or DRO appears in seconds, cutting development and verification time.
  • Simultaneous phase noise and amplitude noise measurement: both are measured at once, with the cross-correlation sensitivity gain shown live as a shaded area, so one run yields the full noise picture.
  • Real-time cross-correlation, sensitivity gain ΔL = 5 × log(n) dB: two internal low phase noise synthesizers feed a real-time cross-correlation engine. The improvement follows the number of correlations n as ΔL = 5 × log(n) dB, reaching a very low floor in R&D mode and finishing quickly with few correlations in production mode.
  • Automatic VCO characterization from built-in very low noise DC sources: the instrument sweeps tuning or supply voltage itself and produces the full curves of frequency, sensitivity, output power and current consumption against voltage.
  • Transient analysis with up to 8 GHz bandwidth: measure settling time after a frequency hop, frequency ramps and switching time in a wideband 8 GHz mode, or use the 40 MHz narrowband mode for detailed PLL transient response. A persistence display shows parameter spread and outliers.
  • SCPI recording and script export: the SCPI recorder turns manual operation into a test script automatically and exports it as Matlab®, Python or C# code. The command set is 100% compatible with the R&S®FSWP.

Typical applications

  • Signal source development and verification: R&D measurements on synthesizers, OCXOs, DROs and other high-end oscillators, with cross-correlation giving a fast read on phase noise performance.
  • VCO production test: automated VCO characterization across tuning and supply voltage ranges, yielding frequency pushing, output power and current consumption data for production acceptance.
  • Radar and aerospace RF component test: phase noise verification of RF components in radar, aerospace and defense applications, with coverage to 50 GHz for high-band work.
  • Satellite communications component development: phase noise analysis of local oscillators and frequency conversion modules, confirming that spectral purity meets the link budget.
  • PLL settling time and transient analysis: with up to 8 GHz transient analysis bandwidth, measure PLL settling and lock time and frequency ramp behaviour, for frequency synthesizer design verification in communications and electronic warfare.
