Overview
Passive broadband probes are an economical yet powerful alternative to active probes for measuring high-speed signals on low impedance lines. The R&S®RT-ZZ80 is a transmission line probe: an impedance-controlled microwave cable terminated into the 50 Ω input of the measuring instrument. Its input impedance is low and stays nearly constant across the whole frequency range, even at the very top of it. Extremely low input capacitance, low noise and high linearity make it a natural fit for broadband single-ended signals in 50 Ω or 75 Ω impedance-controlled environments, and a full accessory range connects it to almost any DUT without giving up the bandwidth, rise time or low input capacitance that make it worth using.
Key features
- Bandwidth up to 8.0 GHz (measured), rise time < 60 ps
- Extremely low input capacitance of 0.3 pF (measured), so the probe barely loads the DUT
- Input impedance stays nearly constant (500 Ω) across the whole frequency range, which is what high-frequency work needs
- Purely passive implementation: no power supply, high reliability, immune to supply noise
- Low noise and high linearity preserve signal integrity
- Standard SMA connector, supplied with the RT-ZA10 SMA(f) to BNC(m) adapter for use with a wide range of oscilloscopes
- Full accessory kit: solder-in signal pins, spring-loaded ground pins, square-pin adapters and more, for any DUT
- 2 kV ESD withstand (human body model) for durability on the bench
Typical applications
- High-speed signal measurement on low impedance lines (50 Ω / 75 Ω impedance-controlled environments)
- High-speed digital design verification and debugging (DDR, SerDes, PCIe and other fast interfaces)
- Signal integrity analysis on RF and microwave circuits
- An economical alternative to an active probe across a wide frequency band
- Probing fine-pitch test points on dense printed circuit boards
- High-frequency circuit characterisation in communications, aerospace and defence
