Overview
The R&S®NGU series is a high-precision single-channel source measure unit from Rohde & Schwarz that puts a precision DC supply and a wide-dynamic-range current meter in one instrument — a natural fit for power consumption analysis on mobile devices, IoT modules and battery-powered products. The NGU is available with a two-quadrant architecture (NGU201) or four quadrants (NGU401 / NGU411), so it acts as a source and as an electronic load, and FastLog acquisition at up to 500 kSa/s captures transient currents from nanoamps to amps without changing range. Voltage priority and current priority modes, a high-capacitance mode and a recovery time under 30 μs keep supply and measurement steady through dynamic loads.
Key features
- Two- and four-quadrant architectures work as both a source and an electronic load (sourcing and sinking current)
- FastLog high-speed acquisition at up to 500 kSa/s with a 2 μs minimum sample interval
- Distinctive ammeter design covers nA to A in a single pass, with no range switching
- Voltage priority and current priority operating modes, plus a high-capacitance mode for large capacitive loads
- Recovery time < 30 μs in voltage priority mode and < 50 μs in current priority mode
- Battery simulation (NGU-K106) and digital voltmeter (NGU-K104) software options
- 5" colour touchscreen with a graphical interface and live V/I waveform display
- LAN, USB and USB-TMC as standard with SCPI remote control; GPIB optional
Typical applications
- Power consumption analysis and battery life prediction for battery-powered devices
- Standby and transmit mode current measurement on phones, wearables and IoT modules
- Battery simulation and charge/discharge characterisation (with the NGU-K106 option)
- I-V curve measurement on LEDs and semiconductor devices
- Reproducing voltage drops and supply fault conditions
- Supply and peak current analysis for wireless modules (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular)
- Power integrity testing of automotive electronics and vehicle ECUs
