Product overview
The R&S®THU9evo is the liquid-cooled high-power UHF TV transmitter family from Rohde & Schwarz. It carries forward the strengths of the widely trusted R&S®THU9 platform with one goal: the lowest possible operating cost for a terrestrial broadcast network. Years of Doherty amplifier experience take the R&S®THU9evo to an overall energy efficiency of up to approximately 40 % for COFDM and 43 % for ATSC with the cooling system included, among the best in its class. Power density is the highest on the market, and several transmitters can share a single rack (MultiTX), which cuts site footprint and rental costs substantially. Configurations range from 1.5 kW to 17.5 kW in one cabinet up to 80.5 kW to 96.5 kW in six cabinets (approximately 106 kW maximum for ATSC). The R&S®THU9evo uses the R&S®TCE901 software-defined exciter, a pure software approach that natively supports DVB-T, DVB-T2, ISDB-T/ISDB-TB, DTMB and ATSC, allows several standards to be installed on one exciter at the same time, and is ATSC 3.0 ready. This family is a transmitter system configured to requirement with no fixed option list — contact KanTek for the best configuration and a quote.
Key features
- Overall energy efficiency of up to approximately 40 % for COFDM and 43 % for ATSC, cooling system included, making full use of Doherty technology
- Highest power density on the market; several transmitters fit in one rack (MultiTX), cutting site footprint and rental costs
- Built on the proven R&S®THU9 platform, with thousands of units in service worldwide and excellent reliability and availability
- Purely liquid-cooled design: amplifier power supplies and first-stage combiners are liquid-cooled too, lowering room heat load and air-conditioning costs
- Adaptive efficiency optimization keeps energy cost at a minimum when the channel or the output power changes
- Low-loss RF combiner structure plugs straight onto the amplifier modules and carries the coolant distribution, reducing RF interconnections and cooling pipework
- R&S®TCE901 software-defined exciter: pure software approach, ATSC 3.0 ready, several standards installable on one exciter at the same time
- Built-in performance analysis (efficiency measurement and integrated signal analysis) and self-monitoring give a live picture of operation
Typical applications
- High-power digital terrestrial television (DTT) main transmitter sites and single frequency networks (SFN)
- Terrestrial broadcasting in DVB-T/DVB-T2, ISDB-T/ISDB-TB, DTMB and ATSC
- Networks planning to introduce or upgrade to ATSC 3.0
- Replacing high-power transmitter sites where operating cost and energy efficiency decide
- Transmitter centres with limited space that need MultiTX to co-site several programmes
- Critical broadcast infrastructure that has to stay on air with high availability for years
