Overview
The R&S®SOVERON AR (model AR5000) is a tactical software defined airborne radio (SDR) from Rohde & Schwarz for military aircraft, housed in a low-SWaP ARINC 600 3 MCU enclosure and covering secure VHF/UHF communications across 30 – 512 MHz. It follows the ESSOR NATO standardized waveform specification and is certified to MIL-STD-704F/810F/461F and SCA 2.2.2. Its modular software architecture allows an encryption waveform (SECOS) and MANET mobile ad hoc networking to be added as options. It is the only airborne SDR in the world that meets both military certification and civil safety avionic standards, so it can serve as a primary ATC radio, and it has been proven in service on platforms including the Portuguese Air Force A-29N Super Tucano, the NH90 and the C-390.
Key features
- Multi-band VHF/UHF coverage (30 – 88 / 108 – 174 / 225 – 512 MHz) with AM/FM/MSK/QAM modes
- Software defined radio architecture (SCA 2.2.2): waveforms upgrade in software, protecting the investment over the long term
- Follows the ESSOR NATO standardized waveform specification for seamless interoperability with NATO allies
- TEMPEST protection, compliant with military electromagnetic compatibility requirements (MIL-STD-461F)
- Digital battle management system (BMS) networking over MIL-STD-1553B / RS-485
- MANET mobile ad hoc networking for dynamic multi-platform communications
- Low SWaP design (ARINC 600, 3 MCU), suited to fighters, helicopters and medium to large UAVs
- The only airborne SDR that meets civil safety avionic standards, so it can fly dual-use missions
Typical applications
- Secure air-to-ground communications for military fixed-wing aircraft — fighters, attack aircraft and transports
- Tactical mission command traffic for rotary-wing aircraft such as special operations helicopters and the NH90
- Data link integration and C4I for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
- Communications support for airborne SIGINT/EW platforms
- Interoperable communications in joint operations with NATO allies
- Primary ATC radio on dual-use special mission aircraft
