Overview
The SCN series of EMC scanners is the new industry standard for near-field EMI measurement, combining a precise XYZ positioning table with a rotating probe head for 4D scanning (three-dimensional movement plus rotation of the probe). The system comes with a near-field probe set (H field and E field) and a 30 dB pre-amplifier — a 3 GHz or 6 GHz kit, upgradeable to 10 GHz with option S310 — and with the optional laser distance meter (SLDM) it follows the topography of the DUT automatically and holds a constant distance between probe and component. The Detectus Scanning Software (DSS) supports hundreds of spectrum analyzers and produces 2D and 3D colored radiation maps, subtraction between two measurements and exactly repeatable scans, so an engineer can judge objectively what each redesign achieved. The SCN series suits pre-compliance verification early in development as much as incoming inspection of supplier parts in production, which makes it a strong tool for bringing an electronic product into line with EMC regulations.
Key features
- 0.1 mm scanning resolution — A minimum step of only 0.1 mm pins an EMI source on the board down to a single component, which cuts the time spent locating a problem considerably.
- 2D or 4D scanning, as the job needs — The SCN-522 scans a plane in 2D; the SCN-524, 534 and 564 scan in 4D (XYZ movement plus probe rotation), which copes with a DUT densely packed with components of differing heights.
- Detectus Scanning Software (DSS) — Drivers for hundreds of spectrum analyzers, 2D and 3D colored radiation maps, subtraction between measurements and exactly repeatable scans present the distribution of the field intuitively.
- Automatic topography tracking with the laser distance meter (option) — With the optional SLDM laser distance meter the head follows the height profile of the DUT surface, holding the probe at a constant distance and building a precise 3D model of the object automatically.
- Four scan table sizes — From a 200 x 100 mm bench-top table to a 600 x 400 x 300 mm large table, the range accommodates anything from a small PCB to a full enclosure.
- For R&D and production QC alike — It serves pre-compliance design verification during development and EMI checks on incoming supplier parts in production, so the investment earns its keep twice over.
Typical applications
- Fast location of radiation sources while the board is still on the bench — Before a product goes to a formal EMC test laboratory, engineers scan the board with the SCN series at high resolution (0.1 mm steps) and read the strongly radiating components or track segments straight off the heat map, then change the layout or add shielding where it actually matters, instead of paying for repeated rework later on.
- Objective measurement across several circuit versions — The development team puts two or more layouts on the scan table in turn and, thanks to the repeatability of an SCN scan, overlays the interference maps produced at the same frequency to show with data which version leaves the fewest internal EMI hot spots — an objective basis for the decision, in place of a judgement by eye.
- Line sampling that keeps supplier parts consistent — In volume production a manufacturer samples boards built with a substituted IC or module and compares the near-field radiation map against the approved reference version; if the radiation of the new batch falls outside the permitted range it is caught before shipment, so a change of part cannot quietly invalidate the EMC certification of the finished product.
