Overview
The Pendulum Instruments P200 high voltage, high current linear amplifier has a fixed gain of 10, amplifying an input of up to ±10 V linearly to a bipolar ±100 V output while holding linearity and stability throughout. At full output (200 Vpp) the usable bandwidth reaches DC to about 80 kHz, and at lower amplitudes it extends to >200 kHz, which covers a wide range of test requirements. The P200 has a slew rate of 30 V/µs as set at the factory and takes a capacitive load of up to 100 nF; it is designed for resistive and capacitive loads and carries both a current protection circuit (limiting at 1 A) and a microfuse (15 mA) to keep the instrument and the equipment under test safe. An input impedance as high as 1 MΩ lets it interface directly with a wide variety of signal sources, while an output impedance of 1 Ω in the linear mode gives it a firm grip on the load — hence its use in piezoelectric positioning control, electrostatic transducer excitation, materials testing and the development of high-voltage instrumentation.
Key features
- High voltage bipolar output — An output voltage range of ±100 V at a fixed linear gain of 10, driven directly from a standard ±10 V signal source with no matching circuit in between.
- Broadband, fast response — At low amplitudes the bandwidth reaches DC to >200 kHz and the slew rate is 30 V/µs, which reproduces a fast signal accurately — what dynamic piezo control asks for.
- High current capability — 1 A of continuous output current and about 128 W of maximum output power, enough to drive piezo devices and electrostatic transducers presenting a large capacitive load (up to 100 nF).
- Protection on several fronts — A 1 A current limiting circuit and a 15 mA microfuse, which opens when the input voltage exceeds 300% of the rating, protect both the instrument and the device under test.
- Well-behaved input and output impedance — A high 1 MΩ input impedance connects directly to a wide range of signal sources, while an output impedance of 1 Ω in the linear mode drives resistive and capacitive loads firmly and steadily.
- Broadly applicable — Designed for piezoelectric positioning stages, electrostatic transducers, materials characterization and high-voltage instrument development, and equally at home in laboratory measurement and industrial process control.
Typical applications
- Piezo actuator drive and nanometer positioning control — In scanning probe microscopy (SPM), semiconductor optical alignment and active vibration suppression, an engineer takes a ±10 V signal from an arbitrary waveform generator, multiplies it ten times in the P200 for ±100 V / 1 A of drive, and controls the displacement and frequency response of a piezo stack actuator precisely — which clears the usual bottleneck of a signal source with too little voltage to excite a piezo device at all.
- Characterizing and verifying electrostatic MEMS devices — MEMS comb drives, electrostatic micromirrors and sensors need high bias voltages during development to reach pull-in or to sweep through resonance. The bipolar ±100 V output of the P200, with its low-distortion broadband response (to >200 kHz for small signals), connects straight to a signal analyzer for impedance and frequency response measurement, which makes it an indispensable excitation source for university laboratories and component manufacturers.
- Simulating drive signals for OLED and liquid crystal panels — Panel makers and materials research institutes assessing OLED electroluminescent efficiency or the phase transition behavior of a liquid crystal need a steady high-voltage AC or DC bias waveform. The P200 amplifies the low-voltage sweep from a standard function generator to the voltage range the device needs, and its short-circuit protection keeps the sample from being destroyed, which speeds up the electrical verification of new emissive materials and alignment layers.
