Overview
The Pendulum Instruments P150 belongs to the P-series of high power single-channel high voltage linear amplifiers. Its fixed gain of x20 (x15 on request) raises a general purpose signal source of up to ±10 V to a unipolar high-voltage output of 0 to +150 V, with 1 A of continuous output current and a maximum output power of about 125 W. The linear circuit design holds linearity high at full output from DC to 60 kHz, and the small-signal bandwidth extends to 200 kHz; the slew rate is set to 30 V/µs at the factory and the capacitive load limit is 100 nF. Input impedance is 1 MΩ (30 pF) and output impedance only 1 Ω, so resistive and capacitive loads of every kind can be driven directly, and a 15 mA microfuse provides overvoltage protection, opening automatically when the input exceeds 300% of the rating. The cabinet measures W 257 x H 102 x D 262 mm and weighs 6 kg, running on 220/230 V, 50/60 Hz line power, which suits a permanent place on a laboratory bench; typical uses are piezo actuator control, MEMS drive, OLED and liquid crystal device testing and high-voltage automated test systems on a production line.
Key features
- High voltage, high current output — A unipolar output reaching +150 V with 1 A of continuous current and about 125 W of maximum output power drives high-voltage loads of every kind steadily.
- Linear from DC to 200 kHz — The output holds linearity high from DC upwards, with a full-output bandwidth of 60 kHz and a small-signal bandwidth extending to 200 kHz, which fits precise measurement from low to medium frequencies.
- Fixed x20 gain, works with any source — The fixed gain of x20 (x15 on request) takes a standard signal source of up to ±10 V directly, with no impedance matching circuit needed.
- Overvoltage protection by design — The built-in 15 mA microfuse opens when the input voltage exceeds 300% of the rating, protecting both the amplifier and the device under test.
- Tuned for piezo and MEMS drive — The factory slew rate of 30 V/µs and the 100 nF capacitive load limit make it particularly suitable for precise drive and testing of piezo actuators, MEMS devices and liquid crystal displays.
- Compact, and easy to deploy — A compact cabinet (W 257 x H 102 x D 262 mm, 6 kg) runs straight from 220/230 V line power with no separate power module, so it integrates into an existing measurement system quickly.
Typical applications
- Piezo actuator drive and nanometer positioning control — When a development laboratory or a precision manufacturer drives a piezo stack actuator, the few volts a signal generator puts out are not enough to produce the displacement wanted. The P150 amplifies the input twenty times and delivers up to 150 V / 1 A, enough to drive the actuator to nanometer positioning directly — the basis of optical stage alignment, AFM scan head control and active vibration isolation.
- Characterizing and verifying the function of MEMS devices — Verifying a microelectromechanical (MEMS) process calls for bias voltages of tens to well over a hundred volts, to measure electrostatic actuation behavior, resonant frequency and breakdown voltage. The P150 supplies a linear, low-distortion high-voltage output which, with an arbitrary waveform generator, allows swept excitation and I-V characterization of MEMS sensors, micropumps and micromirrors on the bench, so a device is known to meet its design specification before it goes into a package.
- Electrical evaluation of OLED panels and liquid crystal devices — Assessing the efficiency of an OLED emissive layer or the drive threshold of a liquid crystal cell needs a high-voltage source that follows an arbitrary waveform exactly and adds no non-linear distortion. The broadband linear output of the P150 (to 200 kHz) reproduces the voltage waveform set on a function generator faithfully, so engineers can measure precisely how drive voltage affects brightness, response time and aging, and get through material screening and process optimization faster.
