Overview
The Pendulum Instruments P100 is a general purpose single-channel broadband high voltage linear amplifier from the P-series (the high power series), built for laboratory and industrial work that depends on precise high-voltage drive. Its fixed x10 gain accepts any signal source with an amplitude no greater than ±10 V — a function generator or an arbitrary waveform generator, for instance — and amplifies it to a bipolar ±50 V output able to drive a wide range of capacitive and resistive loads. The frequency response runs from DC to 100 kHz at full output (100 Vpp) and up to >300 kHz for small signals, with a slew rate of 30 V/µs and a maximum capacitive load of 200 nF as set at the factory. For safe operation the P100 carries a 15 mA microfuse, which blows if the input voltage exceeds 300% of the maximum, and an output current limiter that guards against damage from an accidental short circuit. It is at home driving piezo actuators, MEMS devices, OLED panels and liquid crystal cells, and is widely used in materials research, semiconductor test and the integration of precision measurement systems.
Key features
- High power bipolar output — A ±50 V / 2 A bipolar output with about 128 W of continuous output power drives high-impedance and capacitive loads of every kind without distortion.
- Highly linear fixed x10 gain — The fixed gain of 10 holds linearity high right across the band, which is what measurement and drive applications that need precise voltage control depend on.
- Broadband, DC to >300 kHz — The frequency response runs from DC to >300 kHz for small signals (about 100 kHz at full output) and, with a slew rate of 30 V/µs, reproduces a fast transient faithfully.
- Layered overload protection — A 15 mA microfuse, which blows at 300% input overvoltage, together with the output current limiter, guards the equipment against an accidental short circuit or an overload.
- Drives highly capacitive loads — Up to 200 nF of capacitive load as set at the factory, which is what makes it suitable for piezo actuators, MEMS and liquid crystal devices.
- At home in any laboratory — Any function generator or arbitrary waveform generator will serve as the signal source, and the amplifier is used for high-voltage testing in research institutes, R&D laboratories and component manufacturing.
Typical applications
- Precise control and dynamic characterization of a piezo actuator — A development engineer sends a ±10 V signal from an arbitrary waveform generator through the P100, which raises it to ±50 V / 2 A and drives a piezo stack actuator or a piezo scanning stage directly, for nanometer positioning control and frequency response measurement. The bipolar linear output keeps the actuator free of harmonic distortion over the full travel in both directions, which is what precision optical alignment and active vibration suppression need.
- Electrical verification of MEMS, OLED and liquid crystal devices — In component development and in production quality control, engineers have to apply high-voltage sweep waveforms to MEMS sensors, OLED panels and liquid crystal modules that are beyond what an ordinary signal source can deliver. As the power amplifier in front of the device, the P100 lifts the generator signal to the drive voltage the device needs, while its fixed gain of 10 and low output impedance keep the waveform faithful, so C-V curves, switching timing and aging test results repeat reliably.
- High-voltage signal conditioning and added power on a test bench — The signal sources already on the bench — function generators and arbitrary waveform generators — frequently cannot supply the current or the voltage to drive a large capacitive or low-impedance device under test. Placing the P100 at the end of the signal chain provides up to 128 W of output power from DC to >300 kHz, while the built-in short-circuit protection keeps both the device under test and the instruments safe, so there is no high-voltage drive circuit to design and the test set-up comes together far sooner.
