Overview
The Pendulum Instruments F70PV is a single-channel unipolar variable-gain high-speed linear amplifier, a member of the PV high-speed series. Its core design goal is very high linearity voltage amplification across the wide DC to 5 MHz range, with gain adjustable continuously from 0 to 10 on a front-panel knob, an output voltage up to +70 V and 1.5 A of continuous output current with a built-in current limiting circuit. The slew rate reaches 500 V/µs, letting the F70PV drive capacitive loads such as piezo actuators, MEMS devices, OLED and liquid crystal displays, with a maximum capacitive load of 1 nF. The standard input impedance is 500 Ω (in parallel with 30 pF), the input accepts 0 to +7 V, and a 15 mA microfuse together with a 2 Ω series output resistance prevents overvoltage damage. The F70PV works with a function generator or arbitrary waveform generator as its source and is widely used in materials testing, semiconductor evaluation and precision measurement.
Key features
- Very high slew rate — A slew rate of 500 V/µs drives high-speed capacitive loads such as piezo actuators, MEMS and OLED precisely, keeping the fast transient response free of distortion.
- Continuously variable 0–10× gain — The front-panel knob adjusts gain steplessly from 0 to 10, with a maximum output voltage of +70 V, adapting to signal drive requirements of every kind.
- DC to 5 MHz broadband response — Frequency coverage from DC to 5 MHz maintains very low distortion and high linearity across the whole working band, meeting precision measurement requirements.
- Layered overvoltage protection — A built-in current limiting circuit, a 15 mA microfuse and a 2 Ω series output resistance effectively prevent damage from a short circuit or an input overvoltage.
- Flexible input impedance configuration — The standard input impedance is 500 Ω (in parallel with 30 pF) and 50 Ω or 1 kΩ can be built to order, so a function generator or arbitrary waveform generator integrates easily.
- Piezo and capacitive load applications — Designed for driving capacitive devices such as piezo actuators, MEMS, liquid crystal and OLED, with a maximum capacitive load of 1 nF — an ideal tool for materials testing and semiconductor evaluation.
Typical applications
- Piezo actuator drive and precision positioning control — In the development of nanopositioning stages, ultrasonic transducers and piezo motors, an engineer feeds the low voltage signal from an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) into the F70PV and uses the adjustable 0–10 gain to amplify it to a unipolar output of up to +70 V at 1.5 A, controlling the travel of the piezo element precisely while the 5 MHz bandwidth keeps fast switching waveforms undistorted.
- Characterising electrostatic actuation in MEMS devices — During MEMS process development and outgoing characterisation, the F70PV provides broadband linear amplification from DC to 5 MHz with a high 500 V/µs slew rate, applying unipolar high voltage step or swept excitation to a microelectromechanical device to measure actuation threshold voltage, resonant frequency and electrostatic attraction behaviour — with no need to switch to a bipolar supply.
- Electro-optical characterisation of liquid crystal and OLED devices — Measuring the electro-optical response of liquid crystal panels and OLED devices calls for repeatable, low-distortion unipolar high voltage drive signals. The F70PV's gain adjusts continuously from the front panel, so a laboratory engineer can change the applied voltage range quickly and record a greyscale curve or luminous efficiency with an optical sensor, shortening the material screening and parameter optimisation cycle for display devices considerably.
