Overview
The Pendulum Instruments A400D dual-channel high voltage linear amplifier holds two mutually independent A400 amplifiers in one enclosure, sharing one ground reference and an internal power supply, which makes system integration simpler. A fixed gain of ×20 with a bipolar ±200 V output raises any signal source of up to ±10 V to the voltage the experiment needs, driving piezo actuators, MEMS devices, organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) and liquid crystal devices. Bandwidth reaches DC to 1 MHz at a 100 Vpp output and DC to 500 kHz at maximum output, with a slew rate of up to 400 V/µs for waveform fidelity at high frequency. The output has current limiting protection (150 mA) and the input a 15 mA microfuse that opens automatically when the input voltage exceeds 300% of its rating, protecting the measurement equipment downstream. The A400D is widely used for high voltage functional test in research institutes, R&D laboratories and manufacturing.
Key features
- Fixed gain ×20 bipolar high voltage output — A fixed gain of ×20 and an output voltage of ±200 V turn a standard signal source directly into a high voltage drive signal, with no gain setting to adjust.
- Two channels integrated in one box — The enclosure holds two independent A400 amplifiers sharing a ground reference and power supply, saving rack space and simplifying the wiring of a multi-channel test system.
- DC to 1 MHz bandwidth with a high slew rate — Bandwidth reaches DC to 1 MHz at a 100 Vpp output with a slew rate of 400 V/µs, keeping high-frequency high voltage waveforms intact.
- Twofold overload protection — The input carries a 15 mA microfuse that protects automatically when the input voltage exceeds 300% of its rating; the output has current limiting (150 mA) to prevent short-circuit damage.
- Very low output impedance — An output impedance below 0.1 Ω drives capacitive loads such as piezo actuators and liquid crystal devices effectively, holding the output voltage quality steady.
- Broadly applicable to high voltage drive — Suited to piezo actuators, MEMS, OLED, liquid crystal devices and any R&D laboratory or manufacturing test environment needing a high voltage signal.
Typical applications
- Driving piezo actuators and nanopositioning systems — A piezo actuator needs a linear high voltage signal at the ±200 V level yet is extremely sensitive to noise and non-linearity. An R&D engineer feeds a low-amplitude arbitrary waveform generator (±10 V output) into the A400D and gets an accurate high voltage drive signal amplified 20 times, for closed-loop control of optical scanning stages, ultrasonic transducers and precision positioning stages — without buying a dedicated piezo controller.
- Electrical characterisation of MEMS, OLED and liquid crystal devices — MEMS sensors, OLED pixels and liquid crystal light modulators need broadband (DC to 1 MHz) high voltage signals during development to measure I-V characteristics, switching speed and dielectric performance. The A400D's two independent outputs can apply different high voltage biases to the two electrode sets of a device at the same time, and with an oscilloscope or impedance analyzer a complete electrical characterisation is possible.
- Differential push-pull drive of electro-optic modulators and liquid crystal cells — Devices such as electro-optic (EO) modulators and liquid crystal cells need symmetrical differential high voltage drive to suppress common-mode interference and improve signal-to-noise ratio. The two A400D channels share a ground reference, so an engineer can feed one source into both channels and invert one of them, forming a push-pull output equivalent to ±400 V peak-to-peak — meeting a high voltage differential drive requirement without buying a higher-specification single-channel amplifier.
